Gunnar passed a helmet to Anna. “Know how to wear this thing?”

“I’ve worn a helmet before.” She smirked, though she didn’t look much like the motorized bike type. If he had to pick a mode of transportation that represented her, he would say she was more of a lazy pedaling bicycle type. Not that the label was a criticism.

On Anna, it was a compliment.

She was laid back and casual. Everything about her was comfortable and made Gunnar feel that way as well.

She tilted her head ever so slightly toward the sun and shook her head so that her hair fell back in soft waterfall waves. Grasping the helmet firmly between both hands, she situated it into place like a pro. Anna flipped up the face shield so Gunnar could see her eyes, nose, and the heart shaped tip of her coral lips. “How do I look?”

A baited question. This girl was revving his engine.

“You look like you’re ready to ride.” He tapped the seat. “Are you?”

“Oh, I’m not driving?”

Gunnar froze with the keys in his hand. This was a woman who could surprise him.

And he liked that.

He stretched the keys toward her. “Your choice.” If she wanted to call the shots this evening, that was perfectly fine with him. He had no problem stepping back to let a woman shine.

Anna studied him out of the corner of her eye, not fully committing one way or another. They were engaged in a stand-off tug of war. One of them would be the driver, and one would be the passenger.

Either way, she’d be close to him.

“I trust you to drive.” She flipped down her visor and slid onto the back of the bike, her body as smooth as the leather seat.

“That means you’ll have to hold on tight.” Gunnar followed suit, straddling the bike and keeping his feet grounded as he clicked the key into the ignition and turned it with a gentle purr. Anna wrapped her arms around him in a cozy embrace and rested her chin softly against the back of his shoulder.

“Go easy,” she advised.

He couldn’t help but keep their flattery going a bit longer. “I’ve got precious cargo. I won’t let anything happen to it.”

Gunnar was certain Anna squeezed his midsection just a tad more protectively. With that, he lifted his legs and eased the Italian-styled machine onto the asphalt. The island was small, though he still knew how to add a few curves and turns to their route to lengthen the ride. No need, after all, to take a straight path.

Plus, with every pivot, Anna hugged tighter.

As the normally gentle island breezes whipped past, his skin bristled from the sensation. The world around them had been punched into fast forward mode. Faces in crowds and windows of shops blurred into colorful scenes. Vehicles whirred, and the whole pulse of the island changed from their vantage point.

Anna’s laughter tickled his ear.

“Having fun?” he called to her.

“Absolutely! Loving it!”

Of everything Gunnar heard around him, he liked the sound of Anna’s voice the best.
